Learning with Linota

Who is Linota for?

Adults learning German, from A1 to C1, who meet German every day: at work, on the street, in letters and on screens. The interface is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi and Chinese. Dictionary meanings and study explanations are in English.

How is it different from a flashcard or course app?

You can start with a word pack or build a library from the German you meet. Linota explains each word in the sentence you found it in, and your review cards, the quiz, most of the games and the missions made for you are built from the words you kept.

Is Linota a German course?

It helps you collect, understand and practise German from your own reading and life. It has grammar and guided practice, but it is not a full course or an exam.

What level do I need?

Any level from A1 to C1. You choose yours when you start, and personalised readings, missions and episodes use that level. You can change it any time.

How much time does it take?

As little or as much as you like. The word of the day and today’s practice take about five minutes; a mission or a listening episode takes ten to fifteen.

Inside the app

Where can I collect German from?

From German you read or hear. Tap words in Linota’s own texts, type or say one, open German news, Wikipedia and over 200 more German sites in Linota’s own browser, where the words you saved are highlighted on every page, or share text from Safari. With Basic, open a German ebook (EPUB), PDF or text file, or scan a page with your camera. With Pro, also turn a podcast or voice message into text right on your phone, or read along with a YouTube video’s German subtitles, with an English line under each one if you like. A video, a file, a photo or a recording can also be shared straight to Linota from YouTube, Files, Photos or Voice Memos: Share, then Save to Linota. Your files are never stored, only the text, and every word in it can be tapped.

What are word packs?

Ready-made sets of useful words for your level or one of about 75 everyday topics, free on every plan. Add a whole pack at once, or only the words you want.

What are missions?

Short games set in real situations: a cancelled train, a call to the doctor’s practice, returning a broken kettle, a flat viewing with three rivals, the Bürgeramt before it closes. You answer in your own German, typed or spoken, and get feedback on every reply.

What are Places?

Seven everyday places to walk through in 3D, from a supermarket to a station and a flat. Tap a thing or a person to see what you might think, say, ask and hear there, and save the words you want.

Does my friend need Pro?

No. One Pro member shares the collection; the friend joins and plays on any plan, Free included. Games with a friend use no credits.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. With Pro, your words, study notes, review cards and word games are kept on the phone, so you can practise on a train or a plane without signal, and the app tells you when it is working offline.

Which parts use AI?

AI helps create new learning content: study notes, missions, custom readings, writing feedback, listening episodes, Situations and Prepare a situation. Daily readings and news can also be AI-assisted, and generated voices are identified in the app. Meanings, review cards, the quiz and the games work without it.

Where do the texts and the news come from?

Readings and episodes are written for your level around your words, with care taken over correct German. The short news stories come from Wikipedia’s Current events portal, and every story names its source. Voices are AI-generated.

Will more be added?

New games, missions and places arrive with updates. Each update’s notes say what is new and which plans include it.

Plans and your data

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Up to 200 single words with their meanings, review cards, the quiz, the daily puzzle, Blitz, word packs, the example mission, every place to walk through and everything on Home are free, with 20 credits to try study notes.

Is saving a word free?

Yes. A single word with its dictionary meaning never uses credits. Credits are for things Linota writes for you, like study notes, readings and episodes.

What are learning credits?

The cost is shown before you create something. Credits pay for generated learning content: a study note uses 1, Prepare a situation 4, a reading or writing task 5, a mission from your words or Situations 8, and a listening episode 20. Saving a single word never uses credits, and neither do review cards, games or playing with a friend. If something fails, or a topic is refused, no credits are used. Free starts with 20 once; Basic gets 60 and Pro 120 each month. Every cost, on the pricing page

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple: cancel any time in your iPhone’s settings under your Apple ID. Pro yearly starts with a 7-day free trial: cancel at least a day before it ends and you pay nothing, otherwise Pro continues at €119.99 a year.

What happens to my words and data?

They are yours. You can download them (CSV on Basic, more formats on Pro), choose how long learning data is kept, and delete your account and everything in it from Settings.

Is there a web or Android version?

The iPhone and iPad app comes first. The Linota extension for Chrome saves German from websites on a computer, and a web version is being prepared. Both use the same account.

Start with the next German word you see.
