Terms of service

The agreement for using Linota, written to preserve mandatory consumer rights and set clear responsibilities.

Deutsche Fassung

1. Provider and scope

These terms apply to the Linota iPhone app and your Linota account, including the website screens the app shows (such as missions and Places) and the Linota browser extension for Chrome, operated under the business name Linota by the sole proprietor named in the Legal notice, who is your contracting party. Purchases in the iPhone app are sold by Apple through the App Store (see section 4).

By creating an account or using Linota, you accept these terms and acknowledge the Privacy notice. You must be at least 16 to use Linota. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has authorized the agreement where required.

2. What Linota provides

Linota lets you save supported-language text, view dictionary meanings, request study notes, create review cards, generate custom readings, receive writing feedback, import or export eligible learning data, and use other plan features. The current plan scope and quantitative limits are shown on the Plan screen in the app before purchase.

The Linota browser extension for Chrome is free to install from the Chrome Web Store and is connected to your account with a one-time code from the iPhone app. It saves text you select on websites to your account; study notes it creates use credits as in the app, and Language Radar in the extension is part of Pro. Up to 10 browsers can be connected to one account at a time.

Dictionary meanings and AI-generated material are learning aids, not certified translations, teaching qualifications, or professional advice. AI output may be incomplete or wrong. Verify information that matters with a reliable source. Readings, episodes, missions and combined examples use your saved words where they fit naturally; which words and how many appear is not guaranteed.

3. Account security and acceptable use

Use an email address you control and keep sign-in codes and links and extension connection codes private. You are responsible for activity through your account unless you promptly report unauthorized use.

You must not break the law; infringe intellectual-property or privacy rights; submit malware, confidential data, or sensitive personal data without a lawful reason; scrape or overload the service; automate account creation; evade plan, safety, or rate limits; probe another account; resell access; ask Linota to write sexual, violent, hateful, extremist or illegal material, or material about a real private person (topics you write yourself are checked for this first); or use generated material as high-stakes legal, medical, financial, or safety advice. Linota may proportionately restrict or suspend access when reasonably necessary to stop abuse, secure the service, comply with law, or protect others. Where practicable, we will explain and allow a remedy.

4. Plans, credits, prices, and payment

Free, Basic, and Pro have different features and limits. Learning credits share one balance: a new study note or plan-depth upgrade uses 1 credit; a Pro note addition uses 0.5; a custom reading uses 5; a writing task with its feedback uses 5; a mission made from your words uses 8 once it is prepared, with its replies and retries included; preparing a situation uses 4; a Pro listening episode uses 20 once its audio and transcript are saved; and creating or updating Pro Situations uses 8, including each situation’s example sentences. Reopening and practising saved groups are free. Charges apply after the requested result is saved, including results reused from Linota’s library. Failed creation attempts do not consume credits. Reopening saved results, completing included writing feedback, and repairing missing detail in an existing Pro note use no additional credits. Free starter credits do not renew. Paid monthly credits reset on the first of each month at 00:00 UTC and do not roll over.

In the iPhone app, Basic and Pro are monthly or yearly subscriptions and credit packs are one-off purchases, all sold and billed by Apple through the App Store under Apple's own terms. The App Store shows the price in your currency, including VAT, before you buy. A subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends, in your Apple account settings (on the iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions); the renewal is charged to your Apple account within the 24 hours before the period ends. Pro yearly can start with a free trial of 7 days: unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, the subscription starts and is charged at the yearly price shown when you started the trial. Any unused part of a free trial ends when you buy a subscription. Credit packs never expire and are used after your plan's own credits. Refunds for App Store purchases are decided by Apple: you can ask for one with Request a refund on the Plan screen or at reportaproblem.apple.com. When Apple refunds a purchase, Linota removes what the purchase gave, the plan or the pack's credits. Restore purchases on the Plan screen links your App Store purchases to your Linota account again. Deleting your Linota account does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel it in your Apple account settings.

The iPhone app is licensed to you under Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement together with these Terms; where the two differ about the app as an App Store product, Apple's standard licence applies. Linota, not Apple, is responsible for the app and its content, support and maintenance and for any claims about it; Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for it. Questions and complaints about the app go to Linota.

Except where the offer, Apple, or mandatory law grants a refund, consumed periods and successfully supplied digital services are not voluntarily refundable. This does not limit statutory withdrawal, conformity, price-reduction, termination, repayment, or damages rights. See Withdrawal and cancellation.

5. Consumer conformity and updates

Mandatory rights for digital products remain unaffected. Linota will provide updates, including security updates, required to keep the paid service in conformity for the legally required period. If a defect exists, consumers may have rights to cure, price reduction, termination, reimbursement, or damages under applicable law. A temporary interruption is not automatically a defect, but this clause never replaces mandatory remedies.

6. Availability, maintenance, and changes

Linota is operated with reasonable care, but uninterrupted or error-free availability cannot be promised. Maintenance, third-party outages, security incidents, internet failures, rate limits, or force-majeure events may interrupt features. Keep an export of learning material that is important to you.

We may make reasonable changes to security, compatibility, legal compliance, capacity, or features. Changes must not remove mandatory conformity. If a change materially disadvantages an ongoing paid subscription beyond what the agreement permits, we will provide the information and remedies required by law.

7. Your content and Linota rights

You retain rights in text and notes you provide. You grant Linota the limited, non-exclusive permission needed to store, process, display, synchronize, and, only when requested, send that content to a processor to provide the service. This permission ends when the content is deleted, subject to lawful backups and records.

With Pro you can share a word collection with one other Linota learner. Both of you then see the collection's name, its words with their meanings, the display name of the other person and how many of its words each of you has learned. Share only what you are entitled to share, and invite only people who would expect to hear from you. Either of you can end the sharing at any time: the owner by removing the friend or deleting the collection, the friend by leaving it. Do not share offensive, abusive or unlawful content; either of you can report a shared collection or block the other person, and Linota may remove a shared collection or an account after a report.

The Linota software, design, brand, and original content remain the property of the operator or licensors. Third-party language and article data remain under their stated licenses; see Language data. Feedback may be used to improve Linota without payment, but you are not required to provide it.

8. Liability

Liability is unlimited for intent and gross negligence; injury to life, body, or health; fraud; an expressly assumed guarantee; product-liability claims; and any other liability that cannot legally be limited.

For ordinary negligence, Linota is liable only for breach of an essential contractual obligation whose performance makes the service possible and on which you may reasonably rely. In that case, liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this agreement. Subject to the preceding sentences, liability for ordinary negligence is excluded. Mandatory consumer and digital-product rights remain unaffected.

9. Term, cancellation, suspension, and deletion

The free agreement runs until you or Linota ends it. A subscription bought in the iPhone app renews until you cancel it in your Apple account settings (on the iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, or apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions), at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Withdrawal within 14 days and refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple: use Request a refund on the Plan screen or reportaproblem.apple.com. When Apple refunds a purchase, Linota removes what it gave. See Withdrawal and cancellation. The right to terminate for cause remains.

You may export available data before closing the account. Account deletion permanently removes account-linked product data as described in the Privacy notice. It does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel that in your Apple account settings first. Linota may end a free service with reasonable notice or suspend/terminate for material breach, security risk, non-payment, or legal necessity, taking account of proportionality and mandatory rights.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms for a valid legal, security, or service reason. Material changes affecting an existing account will be communicated in a durable form where required and will not apply retroactively without a lawful basis. If consent is required, the change will not take effect for you without it.

11. Law, disputes, and final provisions

German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, this choice does not deprive you of mandatory protections of your country of residence. A court location is agreed only where legally permitted; consumers may use the courts available under mandatory law.

If one provision is ineffective, the remaining terms continue to apply; the statutory rule replaces the ineffective provision. We are not currently obliged or committed to participate in consumer arbitration before a consumer dispute-resolution body.
